ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
We look for the ability to think creatively, laterally and independently. The programme demands motivation, energy and an inquiring mind.
Other qualities taken into account include:
It is desirable to have students who reflect the multicultural nature of New Zealand society. School leaver applicants should ideally be performing strongly in Year 13 humanities subjects.
The media, communications and creative industries reach into every corner of society. Careers in this fast-growing field offer huge potential for graduates with the right training. AUT University’s Bachelor of Communication Studies (BCS) is New Zealand’s most sought after professional communications qualification. This degree gives students theoretical and practical experience over a wide range of communication fields.
WHAT THIS PROGRAMME COVERS
When you study for your BCS you can prepare for your area of interest by specialising in one major area in Year Three. Alternatively, you can keep some of your options open by studying a major and a minor. Whatever you choose you’ll enjoy the benefits of small, focused classes and tutors with in-depth knowledge and a passion for their subject.
MAJORS
Year One
Students are introduced to essential theory and practice as a basis for later specialisation. The focus is on media and interpersonal communication and the relationships between communication, technology and New Zealand society.
Year Two
Students begin to undertake more practical work in up to three communication disciplines, while continuing to develop critical theory. This allows students to focus their studies more specifically but still keeps options open for them to select a major. Majors and minors begin in this year.
Year Three
Students major in their chosen field. Following the broader focus of Year Two, focus is now put on the theory and practice of a single communication field (major). Students who have begun a minor in Year Two will also complete this in Year Three alongside their major. An internship may be offered as part of the Year Three programme.
