Choose a programme

Before you sign up for a programme it's a good idea to find out as much as you can about the papers that you will be studying and how they fit with your career aspirations and the postgraduate study possibilities that follow. Informed decisions always increase your chances of success.

What major or specialisation should I choose? (pdf)

When choosing a major, think about subjects that interest you, careers that fascinate you, work values you prefer and future trends in the New Zealand and global labour market.

Am I in the right programme? (pdf)

If you’re struggling to understand a particular topic or have received a low grade for a paper, it is easy to start wondering whether you’ve made the right programme choice.

Many factors could be impacting on your ability to do well, including personal and academic challenges. It is important to identify these and find a way to overcome them.

Should I do postgraduate studies? (pdf)

There are personal and professional benefits to gain from postgraduate study.
Before enrolling, ask yourself:

  • Are you interested enough in the subject to want to proceed into more in-depth study?
  • Would postgraduate study improve your employment opportunities?
  • What thesis/dissertation topic would you enjoy undertaking that would also enhance your career prospects?
  • What skills and other attributes will you gain through postgraduate study that will be valuable to employers - and to you.
  • Do you have much work experience? If not, how will you fill the experience gap to complement your postgraduate studies?
