Student loans and allowances (StudyLink)

Student loans

Some students can get a student loan to help with the cost of study through StudyLink. Depending on your circumstances, you can get a student loan for:

  • Compulsory course fees (generally paid by StudyLink directly to AUT)
  • Course-related costs (usually paid directly to you)
  • Living costs (usually paid directly to you)

To get a student loan you must:

  • Be a New Zealand citizen
  • Be a permanent resident (for 3 years or more)
  • Have refugee status

Applying for a student loan

  • Apply for a student loan as soon as possible – well before your programme starts
  • If you're studying for more than 1 year, you need to reapply for a student loan each year
  • Any money you borrow must be paid back in full

Student allowances

You might be entitled to a student allowance while you are studying.

A student allowance is:

  • A weekly payment that can help with your living expenses while you’re studying
  • You don’t have to pay the money back
