Textile Design Laboratory, Colab
Develops innovative models for research, knowledge sharing and entrepreneurial practice across design, electronic arts, science and technology sectors. Our current core staff have backgrounds in interactive art, tangible interfaces, software engineering, mechatronics, affective computing, architecture, design, disruptive educational technologies, moving image, sound installation, game development, social entrepreneurship and business.
- Engineering Research Institute
Comprises six interconnecting research centres spanning arenas from advanced manufacturing, controls, signals, power engineering to industrial management.
- Institute of Biomedical Technologies
Primary activities include Fundamental Research and Applied Research with focus on biomedical applications. The first enables IBTec to explore and publish new ideas of original research and development while the second provides synergy for effective transfer of technology and research capabilities between industry, IBTec and the University.
Institute for Radio Astronomy and Space Research
Focuses on the development of new methods of supercomputing and broadband communication for Radio Astronomy and SKA, preparation of specialists in the field of Radio Astronomy capable of contributing to development of SKA and maintaining new generation of ICT and radio
technology and establishment of sustainable co-operation with the world leading observatories and space agencies (NASA, ESA, JAXA and others).
Professor Tek Tjing Lie, Engineering Research Institute
- Knowledge Engineering and Discovery Research Institute
Researches the development of intelligent information systems that enable knowledge engineering and knowledge discovery. Primary activities include fundamental research and applied research, with a focus on biomedical applications.
Research Centres, Clusters and Labs
- BioDesign Lab
The AUT BioDesign Lab engages biomedical engineering methodologies and expertise in human physiology with industrial and engineering design to deliver new and innovative therapeutic devices and treatments. The AUT BioDesign Lab is part of the inter-faculty Design for Health & Wellbeing Network that engages researchers across the Auckland University of Technology.
- Centre for Performance Research
Research is focused on performance, the employment of actors and other performers in narrative and documentary media, work forms within cultural industries, the role and impact of stardom and celebrity on popular culture, the role of cinema and television in the representation of national identity and the relationship between theatre and cinema acting.
- Centre for Robotics and Vision
Focuses on image and video technology, robotics and automation and the integrated activities of these disciplines.
- Data Science Research Group
Focuses on Large-Scale Data Management, Data Mining with an emphasis on stream mining, Statistical Machine Learning (SML), Information Visualization (IV), and Data Analytics (DA). The primary goal is to design and implement new algorithms that will use a data driven approach to Knowledge Extraction and Prediction of future behaviour.
- Design for Health and Well Being Lab
Located inside Auckland City Hospital, the Design for Health and Wellbeing (DHW) Lab is designing better healthcare experiences for patients, families, and staff. A collaboration between the Auckland District Health Board and AUT’s Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies, the DHW Lab was set up to develop products, services, systems, and experiences for the improved health and wellbeing of all hospital users.
- Emergent Ecologies Lab
Emergent Ecologies is a creative practice lab for indigenous and urban ecologies. The lab speculates on post-carbon urban design futures through co-creative research projects and public events.
High Performance Computing Research Laboratory
Works across a number of research and industry projects / initiatives aligned with computing technologies: exascale supercomputing, big data processing, mobile technologies, signal processing and low power computing.

- Journalism, Media and Democracy Centre
Research areas include journalism history, journalism issues, public sphere theory and issues and political economy of media.
- Mathematical Sciences Research Group
Comprises two main clusters of research academic staff in the areas of Analytics and Applied Mathematics. In the Analytics domain, staff are engaged in research in Statistical Programming, Statistical Methodology, and Stochastic Modelling (including stochastic rainfall modelling). In the Applied Mathematics area, the focus is on Computational & Mathematical Modelling (including Numerical methods, Physics applications) Financial Mathematics and Decision Analysis including Game Theory) and Structural Dynamics (including Acoustics and Waves) The primary goal is to facilitate collaborative activity both within the clusters but also with external researchers in order to develop new models and techniques for some of the key problems in these fields. The MSRG operates a regular seminar series and an annual AUT Mathematical Symposium.
- Multimodal Research Centre
Focuses on multimodal mediation and phenomenology with particular interest in the social actor acting in the world. The centre takes both external and internal mediational means into consideration, and is working across the areas of communication, linguistics, psychology, anthropology and sociology, often conducting extended video-ethnographic fieldwork.
- Network and Security Research Group
Researches network and security industries with particular focus on network design, evaluation, management and services.
- Pacific Media Centre
Focuses on contemporary Māori, Pasifika and ethnic diversity media and culture production. The PMC produces Asia-Pacific news and current affairs publications, including Pacific Journalism Review, Pacific Nius, Pacific Scoop, Pacific Media Watch and Toktok and media books.
- Popular Culture Research Centre
Draws together Popular Culture researchers from a range of backgrounds from the disciplines of communication, cultural, and media studies. The Centre is interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary in nature, and pursues the study of Popular Culture forms within both canonical and non-traditional academic frameworks.
Radiofrequency Identification Application Lab
Works in many areas associated with RFID use including supply-chain, medical and disability applications, RFID security and RFID data management.
Professor David Robie, Pacific Media Centre
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Tertiary Education Centre
Focuses on STEM education at tertiary level with the aim of increasing the number and improving the quality of STEM graduates for the New Zealand knowledge economy by conducting high quality research in STEM education; implementing best pedagogical strategies in the teaching and learning of STEM subjects; and ensuring equity and creating opportunity via social and community engagement.
- Sensor Network and Smart Environment Research Centre
Research and development focuses on intelligent sensor networks including wildlife cognitive sensor network, energy efficient fuzzy sub-clustering for sensor network data streaming, microwave timber property mapping, sensor network and human comfort, sensor network and object surrounding environment tracking, sensor network train localization, sensor network and accident avoidance.
- Service and Cloud Computing Research Lab (SCCRL)
Provides a range of facilities for research into service-oriented computing applications, platforms and infrastructure. The lab provides a home for service computing, networking and security researchers, as well as postgraduate research students (masters and PhD) and undergraduate projects, and collaborative research activities with external industry and academic partners. The SCCRL is located in a purpose designed research precinct and contains specialised facilities, including a powerful research cluster, for research programmes in security, network performance, and cloud based application performance and monitoring, distributed applications, applications of blockchain technologies and big and complex data.
- Software Engineering Research Laboratory
Undertakes research directed at understanding and improving the practice of software systems.
- Statistical Consultancy Centre
Draws together practising and theoretical statisticians from a range of backgrounds and coordinates the provision of statistical advice to AUT researchers and external organisations. The Centre attracts external research income and acts as a focal point for internal and external statistical consultancy.
Telemetrics Research Centre
The Telemetrics Research Centre (trc) was established in 2009. In broad terms, the Centre carries out research and development work (with associated teaching and supervision) in two aspects of the GeoComputational research domain:
- Instrumentation and measurement (including some design and construction)
- Data acquisition, interpolation and modelling (including some simulation and visualisation)
The Centre consists of academic staff, researchers, students and technicians who work on a variety of projects with others in the School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences, others across Auckland University of Technology and other universities and research agencies in New Zealand and internationally.
Our facilities include staff offices, Masters and PhD work spaces, a meeting/discussion area and an instrumentation workshop/laboratory (The GeoSense Lab) where equipment for making, calibrating and performance testing of data logging and communication instruments takes place. Current work of this nature includes climate and atmospheric measurement instruments, wireless sensor networks (WSN) for various applications, Light Detection and Radar (LIDAR) with associated instruments for measurement and simulation construction, signal processing workbench instruments, making equipment, an autonomous vehicle project, environmental sensor devices for vehicular navigation, environmental impact instruments (especially for pest control monitoring), acoustic and robotic devices for use with autistic children learning enablement.
- The UFO Bureau (of Investigation)
The UFO Bureau (of Investigation) through individual and co-operative modes of art practice, the ways in which power, or energetic force (e.g. social, political, physical), can deconstruct the facades (e.g. language, systems,infrastructure and stereotypes) that delineate diverse discipline paradigms. Using a project-based structure of inquiry, individual artist/researchers cooperatively produce artworks and ideas that model and propose heterogenic paradigms of transdisciplinary praxis.
Qualitative research methods intend to produce research outcomes including artworks, exhibitions, and curricula; learning materials (e.g. lectures, projects, workshops and seminars), articles/papers. Generating a critical forum/online resource http://ufolog.co/ to facilitate dialogue, document and disseminate research outcomes.
