Digital is the future, says AUT business alumnus Tri Huynh who now works as a digital planner for independent advertising and media agency Mediaco.

“In today’s world, digital is the ‘new normal’ for marketing and advertising activities, and there are many ways to use this channel to achieve business goals.

“As a digital planner, I’m responsible for researching, planning and optimising advertising campaigns on digital channels, helping our clients meet their business objectives and build their brands. I love it because of the flexibility and the effectiveness of the channel.”

A love of advertising and brands
He chose to study marketing because he was fascinated by the global appeal of brands like Nokia or Apple, says Tri who came to AUT as an international student from Vietnam.

“I’ve always been curious about why people decide to buy one brand but not another, regardless of the similarity of their products. I decided to study marketing and management to learn how to build brand value, and explore the consumer perception and company culture surrounding brands.”

The focus on real-life business skills is what he enjoyed most about his studies, Tri says.

“At AUT, we had many group projects where we could apply the theory to the real world.  For one project, we had to build our own business and then test if we could make any profit from our business idea.  Our group decided to create an advertising agency, and I loved being able to build this agency from scratch and then run it, all within only six weeks.

“I loved this experience so much that my first job after university was in advertising, and I’ve now been working in the marketing and advertising industry for more than eight years.”

Advice for other students
Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, Tri encourages other students.

“The lecturers at AUT are very friendly and willing to go the extra mile to help you. Don’t worry about making a mistake. Go and talk to the lecturers if you have an issue or an idea.”

Make the most of all the opportunities on offer for students, he adds.

“There are many groups at AUT students can join to learn and build their networks, for example MARS@AUT, a student initiative focused on marketing, advertising, retailing and sales. You will enjoy talking to these fantastic people and learn a lot from them.”
