AUT's MBA is designed to offer you maximum flexibility. This allows you to continue working full time while completing your MBA part time.

You can choose the number of papers taken in any given term to fit around work demands, travel, and personal commitments provided you complete the qualification (180 points) within the required time period of four years.

Full time students usually complete the MBA within 18mths, however you can fast track and complete the qualification in one year.

Part time, the MBA usually takes between two to four years.

  • Each paper involves six weeks of class learning
  • One three-hour class per week
  • This is followed by an examination week then a one week preparation period for the following term

You may commence the MBA at the start of any one of the six terms listed below.

MBA Induction

MBA Induction is normally held on the Friday before the commencement of term. Induction welcomes you to the programme and gives you the information you need about AUT and the MBA, including:

  • International student session
  • Postgraduate study success seminars such as:
    • Critical thinking & academic writing
    • Databases, referencing and plagiarism
    • Goals and study options
  • Information systems
  • Library information
  • Enrolment and administration guidance
  • Collecting textbooks
  • City campus tour

To graduate with an MBA you must successfully complete 180 points, which is made up of core papers (135 points) and elective papers (45 points).

All papers are 7.5 points each unless stated otherwise.

Completion requirements
A student with an average grade falling below a B- in papers prior to enrolment in the applied business project may be required by the examination board to have their points reassigned to the Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration or the Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration.

MBA - Further Study and Opportunities

Opportunities are also available for you to complete a special topic paper in a relevant area, subject to the approval of the MBA Director. There are opportunities to work with start up companies at AUT’s Business Innovation Centre or for you to develop your own business idea or project.

You can also complement study by completing elective papers at one of AUT’s International Business School partners, subject to approval by the MBA Director.
