Master of Business Administration

A sense of self-belief and the knowledge and tools to make a difference – these are the assets AUT alumnus Ian Robertshaw is taking away from his Master of Business Administration.

“I wanted to develop stronger general management competencies and build a range of frameworks and tools for understanding and improving performance. AUT has delivered this in spades and this education has opened up amazing opportunities for me professionally,” says Ian who graduated with distinction and Beta Gamma Sigma Honours.

Excellence in business education

Postgraduate study was a long-held goal for Ian but it was the flexibility of the AUT programme that made it possible for him to realise it.

“Due to professional commitments, the only way I could undertake these studies was to have flexibility in the timetable. AUT made learning accessible by packaging all of this into a rigorous part-time programme that met my needs.”

Apart from the flexibility offered by the MBA programme, Ian’s decision to study at AUT was driven by the university’s reputation for excellence in business education.

“The high calibre of academic staff combined with relevant industry experience delivers a powerful learning programme.

“AUT has great facilities and these provide a really effective learning environment.  Because the university is present in Auckland’s CBD, on the North Shore and in Manukau, there are always places to study, meet or just catch up. While much has been said of the move to online degree programmes internationally, the blended learning environment at AUT is perhaps the best combination of all.”

Tangible professional benefits

For Ian, AUT’s readiness to engage with industry and the interdisciplinary approach to teaching and learning has already delivered tangible benefits in his professional life.

“I have been able to work with a group of third-year product design students from AUT to develop new concepts for public transport customer experience.”

Following his studies, Ian says he feels equipped to succeed in today’s rapidly evolving business environment.

“Once upon a time the fundamentals were sufficient to navigate a way to success in business – but these have changed so drastically that traditional business models are being supplanted.

“My MBA has added credibility to the extensive management experience I have gained over the years, and set the foundation for my future.”
