Additional Entry or Selection Criteria

Addition to the general admission requirements above the following qualifications have additional entry or selection criteria:

Applicants for whom English or Māori is not their first language must provide proof of their English proficiency. IELTS (academic), completed within the last two years is the preferred test for entry. Some programmes have higher requirements for IELTS entry and these exceptions are listed in the table below. Please refer to this page for more information on English language requirements.

Master of Communication Studies - Year 2 (thesis year)
Completion of a Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies or Bachelor of Communication Studies (Honours) with a B grade average.
BACHELOR'S DEGREE WITH HONOURS

Bachelor of Communication Studies (Hons)
CV and/or interview may be required.
Minimum IELTS (academic) requirements are as follows: 7 overall with 7 in writing, 6.5 in reading,  6.5 in listening and 7 in speaking.
POSTGRADUATE CERTIFICATE

Postgraduate Certificate in Communication Studies
CV and/or interview may be required.
Minimum IELTS (academic) requirements are as follows: 7 overall with 7 in writing, 6.5 in reading,  6.5 in listening and 7 in speaking.
POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMAS
 

Postgraduate Diploma in Brand Communication

Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies
(Digital Media)

An interview may be required.
Minimum IELTS (academic) requirements are as follows: 7 overall with 7 in writing, 6.5 in reading,  6.5 in listening and 7 in speaking. 
Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies
(Journalism)
CV, portfolio, academic transcripts and a brief application letter that includes a statement on why you wish to be a journalist and the key challenges you think the media is currently facing.

Minimum IELTS (academic) requirements are as follows: 7 overall with 7 in writing, 6.5 in reading,  6.5 in listening and 7 in speaking.

Portfolio: Please provide examples of published work or other writing which indicate that your interest in journalism and your research/writing skills, or other evidence of a commitment to a career in journalism i.e. stories, articles, clippings, DVDs, radio scripts, visits to media offices etc. No university essays. 20 A4 pages maximum.
 
Please note that your portfolio & academic transcripts are graded and ranked.* A written test will be conducted at AUT and you may also be required to attend an interview.
Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies (Public
Relations)
CV and application letter.
An interview may be required.

Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies (Screen Production)

CV and application letter.
Interview may be required.
Minimum IELTS (academic) requirements are as follows: 7 overall with 7 in writing, 6.5 in reading,  6.5 in listening and 7 in speaking.
Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies (Standard) CV and/or interview may be required.
Minimum IELTS (academic) requirements are as follows: 7 overall with 7 in writing, 6.5 in reading,  6.5 in listening and 7 in speaking.
