Quality Control Technician, Epicurean Dairy Limited
Bachelor of Science in Food Science
Like a lot of people, Veasna Vann is concerned about where his food comes from and how it’s made. The Bachelor of Science alumnus found all the answers he needed at AUT.
“I love being healthy, therefore what I eat concerns me. I’ve always wondered how processed foods are made, and whether they’re safe and nutritious for me and the people I love. Studying food science was a way of satisfying my curiosity.
“A qualification in food science is rewarding – it’s listed on the New Zealand government skills shortage list, and there’s also global demand for qualified food science professionals.”
Before Veasna even graduated, he had the opportunity to experience life as a food technologist, formulating new, nutritious snack bars as part of his final-year paper.
“Since AUT has strong industry relations, during my final year of study I was involved in new product development at a large New Zealand food company. I was able to learn every single part of the process from initial concept to the final prototype.”
A rewarding career
After graduating at the end of last year, Veasna has found a rewarding career in his role of quality control technician at dairy company Epicurean Dairy Limited.
“My current role includes quality checks, in-house lab testing and preparation of the batch recipes. I love being able to contribute to the creation of safe and nutritious food products.”
He says that AUT gave him not just the knowledge for his career, but confidence too.
“AUT gave me the right attitude to achieve competence in my role. Throughout my studies, AUT offered a lot of support and opportunities, including my workplace experience.”
Helping students succeed
As an international student from Cambodia, Veasna found his first semester challenging. However, he says the AUT lecturers were supportive.
“AUT lecturers are so helpful and approachable, and they helped me stay on track. AUT helps students to be ready to hit the workforce once they graduate, so with my knowledge and work ethic I’m going to change the world.”
His advice for other students is not to be afraid of new challenges.
“Just listen to your heart and go for it. Be yourself, then you will be at your full potential. AUT also offers a lot of student services, so remember to ask if you ever need any help.”
